028 - My Buddy Mong Tua

A whatsapp video that was forwarded by a friend was about creativity of a poor man improvised using what ever material he had to help his aging mother ( I am unable to upload the video herenow Probably will get it done later) , reminded of the Burmese man who made all our sofas in Andamans from scratch using quality Padauk Timber that was as good as Oak. The seat and back had weaved cane. We still have these sofas in Madras in my Sister Manjus home.

Talking of Andamans and Burmese carpenter I just remembered something awesome I want to share.👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

My best friend in Andamans was a Burmese chap Mong Tua in primary school. I left Port Blair in 1955. In 1967 at IITM my classmate and hostel wing mate Anupam Sen my best buddy was Soccer centre forward and IITM captain and I accompanied the team to all intercollegiate games. One such match was against Loyola college where I did my PUC. In Loyola Team there was a Nepalese looking chap and his face was very familiar.

The game started and one team player yelled out saying Mongtua pass it to me. My heart skipped a beat with excitement could it be my buddy from Port Blair. Half time came and I walked up to him and said are you from Port Blair. His eyes opened wide and then he said Ramchander and we hugged and cried.  He was in his final year doing a Science Degree in Physics.

What are the odds of meeting a pal from a distant island after 12 long years.

Mong Tua and I used to collect chocolate silver paper wrappings. Was the in thing those days. At school there was this terrible kid with a huge deformed ribcage who used to bully boys and girls and pinch our silver paper collection. He picked on me once as I was skinny scrawny 30kilos at best. Mongtua stood up for me grabbed the baddie and told him to give my silver paper back to me or he would smash his face in. I got my collection back and the bad boy never came anywhere near me my sister or my two cousins. And here he was playing Soccer for Loyola college Madras.

Life my friends is meant to be beautiful. Have a Great Day..

It is 3.00pm on a Saturday afternoon and my son, two dogs and a cat are all asleep after a busy week I presume. :-)
