In my first Job interview in Oz in 1980, I was offered a job as a Sales Engineer in Noise Control. I told them I was an engineer and not a sales man and declined the offer.
Two days later I got a second offer where they had upped my salary, included a fully maintained company car and my job title was "Acoustic Engineer".
I let people know I was not going to be bullied or pushed around or made to toe the line, my second in command John Cole told me once, "Ram the thing about you is that, You don't Suffer Fools" and many people cannot handle that.
My Mother was more passive. She said ignore people who are nasty to you, turn your back on them and walk away as they are just not worth it.
I only take people on, if they provoke me and for the rest who want to be nasty to me, I do walk away from them and strike their names off my books for ever.
No forgive and forget bull shit.
I just do not want to waste time with nasty people. Period. I hate Political Correctness as opposed to standing your ground and defending your beliefs.
