318 - ARE IITIANS ANTS PANTS TECHONOLOGISTS ?,

23rd July 2021

ARE IITIAN'S ANTS PANTS TECHNOLOGISTS ?

[12:55, 7/23/2021] Ram: My Presumption is that Majority of IIT Alumni who excelled  were management gurus after doing their MBA's and those who chose to be  Academic Professionals. How many IIT Alumni do you know, who excelled in the branch of engineereing they did for their BTech degrees. As for me you know I switched from Civil Engineering to Acoustics and Industrial Noise Control.

Nacha IITM 1968 Batch

[13:05, 7/23/2021] πŸš«πŸ’šπŸ’š Nacha IITM: I stayed in Engineering and Manufacturing albeit in Medical devices. As my career progressed I got into senior management

[13:09, 7/23/2021] Ram: Did you do mech engineering or electronic?

[13:09, 7/23/2021] πŸš«πŸ’šπŸ’š Nacha IITM: Mechanical Engg

[13:10, 7/23/2021] Ram: So manufacturing medical devices is not a mech engg job. This is what I am alluding to

[13:11, 7/23/2021] Ram: Name a few classmates from IITM who continued in the same branch of engineering

[13:13, 7/23/2021] πŸš«πŸ’šπŸ’š Nacha IITM: On the contrary I had machine shops, plastic extruders and braiding machines. Very much Mechanical Engg

[14:23, 7/23/2021] Ram: good. So why did you switch to making doasas ? ( Just Kidding)

Vedamanikkam IITM 1968 Batch

[13:34, 7/23/2021] ✌πŸ’šπŸ’š Ved MANICKAM: You have a good point. I mostly functioned as an MBA, while acquiring a lot of Reservoir Engineering (Oil & Natural Gas) knowledge backed up by several one-week crash courses in the same. The lack of opportunity in Canada in Metallurgical Engg. forced me to change.

[13:37, 7/23/2021] ✌πŸ’šπŸ’š Ved MANICKAM: Purinder Ganju functioned as a real engineer. Would you consider Jayant Baliga as a real engineer, OR a scientist/R&D/Academic?

I am sure many more started off as engineers only to move into management as their careers progressed. Eg. Subramaniyam Chandilya.

[13:51, 7/23/2021] Ram: Mate Purinder is a consultant not a hands on mechanical engineer I think. I may be wrong.

[13:53, 7/23/2021] Ram: Jayant Baliga is everything. He worked for GE and also did his research inventions and patents starting at GE before becoming an academic

[13:54, 7/23/2021] Ram: Chandilya and I were very close. I visited him a few weeks before he died. He was in management and audco valves had nothing to do with metallurgy

Prabhakar Konath IITM 1970 Batch

That switch is still engineering.

My view is that whoever stuck to engineering in India or outside did extremely well, even though many of us were not toppers.

Most toppers who did IIM were only moderately successful. Never reached the heights.

Raghav Mittal

[13:05, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: this is quite a revelation Ram Da….Superspecializations and connect to Humanities have truly helped the ascendence...

[13:07, 7/23/2021] Ram: Can you name even a few who have excelled in the branch of engg they did for BTech

[13:09, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: even Sundar Pichai was a Meta grad from KGP….he moved onto to take higher courses to make his way to the top of google.

[13:10, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: B.Tech is mostly for corporate employment - at the initial or middle level competencies

[13:13, 7/23/2021] Ram: Imho last two years of B Tech is wasted

[13:14, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: yep...

[13:14, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: first year is all about infatuation with the IITs….and till third year frustration sets in...

[13:14, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: clarity dawns upon only a bit late when you touch the final year...

[13:15, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: there is very little macro view of things even at IITs…at our time they introduced Computer Science & Information Technology….very few of the Profs could explain the purport of the latter...

[13:26, 7/23/2021] Ram: See collectively if we put all such thoughts to gether we can restore all 25 IITs. In Germany they have a three year general engg diploma degree where students can get of or choose branch of engg after diploma. Iits are virtually force feeding reluctant students who may not even have any aptitude for engineering. There were many who could not vidualise 3D. Or draw even a straight line. These chaps all got wasted as engineers

[13:29, 7/23/2021] Ram: To be honest education has to be fun and iits take the fun out of education. It was at Syd Uni that I truly enjoyed education as all my teachers were hands on engineers. Not quack PhD nerds who had never worked one day as an engineer

[14:39, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: wow...this is quite like the MBBS programme....where the human body is studied as a whole and then specializations and super specializations go on...

[14:40, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: in today's world when we are on the convergence of techs - the 4th industrial revolution as they say

[14:40, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: he he he....

[14:46, 7/23/2021] ✌✔πŸ’š Raghav MITTAL IITKgp: In fact if we have something on this, we can present it to the IIT council and MoE to take care of in new Recruitments....hands on engineers to be given space in IIT faculty recruitment too

Going forward IIT global can petition, advocate etc in a formal manner...

Monu Abraham IITM 1969 Batch

[13:28, 7/23/2021] ✌πŸ’šπŸ’š Monu ABRAHAM: The following immediately comes to mind.

Chandilya was the CEO of Audco an L&T Company specialising in Valves.

Ashok kumar Rao had a very succesful Civil engineering company specialising in structural engineering.

Raju C Jacob had his own chemical company making pharmaceutical intermediaries.

[13:33, 7/23/2021] Ram: Chzndilya was in management. He was a metallurgist. Ashok Rao yes remained a civil engg despite quitting and doing medicine.Shankar swamy made batteries and now guitars. I bet Raju Jacob is CEO

[13:34, 7/23/2021] ✌πŸ’šπŸ’š Monu ABRAHAM: Raju owned the company.

[13:36, 7/23/2021] ✌πŸ’šπŸ’š Monu ABRAHAM: Raju set up the cpany from scratch

[15:09, 7/23/2021] Ram: Raju is more an entreprenuer

[15:48, 7/23/2021] ✌πŸ’šπŸ’š Monu ABRAHAM: What about Ramanujan

[16:03, 7/23/2021] Ram: Yes Ramanujam remained a Civil engineer. Was a Slave to Arabs and a Yes Sir Man and is not a Global Icon is he ? I am talking about IITians who are world famous Like Rajat Gupta and Sundar Pichay Types

[16:05, 7/23/2021] Ram: Probably Rajaram Bhat had a career in Electronics with Bell Industries. Not Sure what Vicram Prabhu did in USA?

[16:11, 7/23/2021] Ram: Just look at your B Tech Chemical Batch. You went to a Tyre company, Solly worked all his life for IBM, Joshy became a Fire Engineer, Gopi worked for State bank, Shyam Sundar joined Indian Oil as Management trainee, Raju Jacob a Businessman, Ranganathan became a management prof .

So who remained a Chemical Engineer and excelled as a Chemical Engineer is the question ?

We all grabbed what ever job we could find. With my B Tech Civil I stated an electroplating business and failed thanks to TTK and TVS crooks

Vickram Crishna IITD 1975 Batch

[13:00, 7/23/2021] ✔✌πŸ’š Vickram Crishna: What is the logic of this question, actually?

For those who did well for themselves with management degrees, it needs to be asked, what was actually achieved?

For those who stayed with their engineering discipline, what did they create?

[13:06, 7/23/2021] Ram: Mate I am alluding to the fact that IITs have  not produced Technologists. Sundar Pichay did Metallurgy followed by MBA for example. Was your career in the branch of engineering you studied is the question

[13:29, 7/23/2021] ✔✌πŸ’š Vickram Crishna: Not mine. Did that background help me? Certainly

Subash Chandra IIT Kgp 1969

Absolutely right, Ram - at the reunion in 2019, barely 10% had continued in their field - all the fat cats were in the Management / Finance side of things, only a couple in Software etc

Ranganathan. IITM 1969 Batch:

you are right.

Chiku Machayya IITM 1970 Batch

[22:33, 7/23/2021] πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š Chiku Machayya: There are quite a few IIT alumni who excelled in their engg branch. Among them from the Aero batch were Daljit Singh, D Bharathan, SP Vishwanathan, Dilip Kumar and M Ranganathan (5 out of 18)

[23:22, 7/23/2021] Ram: Daljit yes. Desikan Bharathan No. He was more and academic and taught even in Queensland I don't know the rest

[23:23, 7/23/2021] Ram: when I said excelled, I meant chaps like Jayant Baliga acclaimed Globally not run of the mill employment
