Most people who know me think I am a bit queer, because I never chased money or fame ever which is what every one else was trying to achieve in life.
Growing up in a large family with financial restraints, my sisters and I learnt the art of living within our means and make do with what we had and shared what ever we had. Unlike my sisters I was lucky not o get any pass-me-downs as I am the only son.
"We all had each other and that was more wealth than anything in this world.". Trust me nothing mattered more
I must say I got my inspiration from my Grand Uncle in Andamans - Govindarajulu Naidu. He escaped death at the hands of the Japanese regime in Andamans during WW II and his advice to me as a young kid was "Be a Good man always, Do the right thing in Life by others and Goddess Laxmi will be always around and look after you".
He lived to a ripe old age of 93 and I have never met any one more generous in life than him. Every time he bought his daughter clothes, watches or Jewellery he would buy for my sisters too considering they were all the same age and all living in Andamans then. He was the God father and my mother worshipped him for his qualities, Seldom got angry, but when he did you did not want to be around. His wife copped it most of the time as they were not at the same wave length.
Had I been a Crook I could have minted a tonne of money taking bribes when I was a Junior Enginner at Rameswaram incharge of the approach roads for the Pamban Bridge. The fact that I opposed all corruption and bribes almost got me killed and fed to the sharks. I fled virtually and kept running until I landed in Sydney, from one convict Island to another.
My spectacular career as an Acoustics and Industrial Noise Control Engineer ended on 13th April 2000, when my Brain Stem Stroke made me partially a vegetable with a paralysed left leg.
I tried hard but could not get back to work work and my accountant called me on the phone one day and said Ram on paper you are still the Managing Director of Noise Control Australia Pty Ltd., but your two partners are running the business now in your absence and they are bidding for some major contracts. If they screw up you will be legally and financially liable and may lose all your assets. Please take my advice and cut yourself loose. I can calculate what they will have to pay for the 40% share you hold in the company.
I did not want to put my partners who were already in strife with me being knocked out and the company executing many major projects for the Sydney Olympics into further financial strife. To be fair to them I went to the Office one day and signed my 40% share to them for just "One Australian Dollar" but asked to retain my Company Car, my Faithful Mazda MPV Sports People Mover.
Believe it or not I have not earned one cent since 13th April 2000 but have lived a pretty comfortable life, as I had the foresight to take out Insurances for Income Protection as well as TPD ( Total permanent Disability).
My Income Protection Insurance paid me 70% of my last monthly Income every month for next five years. I was confident I'd get back to work and kept paying my annual contribution for TPD. In 2006 my doctors felt I will never be bale to work full time and the insurance company paid me out in full my TPD. Yes Goddess Laxmi was working hard behid the scenes
Mithu continued working until year 2016 as SAP Specialist at Dupont and Anand got married in November 2012.
We have had enough savings and superannuation to sustain a comfortable living and have no regrets. My uncles most valuable advice has taken care of me.
My Uncle SNORED like mad and so we call him Burrrrr Thatha. Little did I know that I'd snore ten times louder than him and suffer from Sleep Apnea and will have a Complex Uvulo Plasty Laser Surgery in 2002 in London to reduce the snoring. It worked for may be ten years and now I am paying the penalty as all the scar tissues in the throat have grown back and I am snoring ten times louder. I was diagnosed with severe Sleep apnea in 1989 and have never slept a night without my Sleep apnea Mask/Machine since.
My Sona and Chandis are with me always, my sisters and nephews and nieces who have been in my life long before I met Mithu and now have a beautiful and warm home that Mithu and I share with our Golden Boys Anand & four legged Bailey and Daughter Bellsy the Cat. What more does a man need?
