Diwali or Deepavali is a festival full of sweet childhood memories.
"A sky full of lights, a mouthful of sweets and a heart full of Joy. "
This is an awesome Diwali Greeting to receive.
I am sitting here now in Sydney and thinking of the hustle and bustle and having oil baths at 5.00am wearing news and colourful clothes and rushing outside the house to set off the crackers, an unspoken competition with the neighbours and the awesome sulphur smell and smoke drifting in the breeze along with my Amma's constant words of caution to be careful and avoid accidents.
By 9.00 am we had a most amazing breakfast of pooris, idlis, dosas with lamb curry and pongal, kesari and filter coffee that we devoured without thinking of the effort that was required to produce this in the small kitchen.
Girls were seldom happy with their new clothes as the neighbours outfits were always better.
By lunch time our special guests arrived our Christian and Muslim friends and most of them brought exquisite sweets boxes from Arya Bhavan or Ananda Bhavan in Madras.
By 2.30pm the guests have gone and every one having pigged out was sprawling like python in each and every sofa and bed available. The slumber that followed was awesome too and as night fell the sparklers came out. Yes Thanks for rekindling sweet memories.
Happy Diwali to you and all your loved ones. God Bless.
From Ram and Mithu in Sydney.
PS: My fav cousins Sudhakar and Ambu and Aunt Yesodhakka were always with us to celebrate Deepavali in Mylapore. Yesodhakka got me and Sudhakar identical Shirts most often from Khadhi Silks. Sweet memories for sure
