IITM 1970 Batchmate

My response to IITM Kerala group in connection with the latest suicide below..
Each tragic event is due to a single or combination of causes. Only the investigation will reveal.
The authorities have no political influence.
Please remember that Humanities degree students and faculty are not IIT people.
Their selection may have been influenced by JNU culture. Whose help was taken when Humanities degrees were introduced.
There were lot of national scholarship holders, science talent scheme, merit cum means scholars, other national scholarship students in my BTech batch. Needless to say there were poor students. Fees were very low. Also Masters students got handsome stipends. Many MTech students were there preparing for competitive exams.
These are facts.
As for JNU, it's students, it's faculty, their culture and ideals the less said the better.
Whereas humanities subjects are necessary for science and engineering courses, the introduction of Humanities degrees in IITM is a Trojan horse that could spell it's ruin. It is pure politics.

There is no objection to teaching humanities for the science engineering and management students and the faculty for this purpose. It is essential and necessary.
The problems at IITM started after graduate courses were introduced in humanities and consequent increase in different humanities faculties.
Not suicides alone, but other recent problems.
Humanities are necessary for engineers and scientists. The Germans wanted a few courses in Kalashetra, appreciation courses to be introduced for IITM undergraduates.
Some people may be admirers of JNU and it's culture. Most Alumni of IITM abhor the idea.
[20/11, 12:12 PM] Prabhakar Konath:
The students or faculty in JNU are not comparable to us. That is my opinion.
Also many students there, stay until 30 years of age, or more taking advantage of free hostels rooms etc., God knows doing what. They are also extremely intolerant of students and faculty with opposing ideologies making life miserable for them.

The article looks to be bull shit.
The reason for more suicides among the Sheduled Caste, OBC and other backward classes is not the discrimination against them but inability to cope with the tough academic standards as many reserved category students are admitted in spite if their poor academic record and very poor performance in the admissions test.
The solution lies in having a higher cut off limit. For example at our times, the there was no blanket reservation. The reserved category students to be admitted had to be within 5 % below the last student admitted in open category.
For example, if the last student admitted secured 60 % marks in the entrance test, the reserved category students must secure marks between 55% to 60 %.
This was done to see that the students admitted had a reasonable chance of completing the course of studies.
The responsibility for suicides is surely that of the central government which introduced the system of reservations with no cut off level.

Even in IIMA, out of 180 students admitted in the 1st year in 1977, my batch, 35 were expelled due to not meeting the required academic standards. 34 of them belonged to reserved category. IIMA has far more liberal system, which allows a student to be promoted ever if he gets F (Fail) GRADE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO SECURED LESS THAN 20% MARKS.
A student was allowed to go to 2nd year if he gets 2 Fs 4 Ds or 1 F and 2 Ds subject to his having an overall GPA of 2 out of 4.

I was the student representative in Academic Committee. I persuaded the Academic Council to allow 5 best students from those who had failed to repeat the 1st year. It was done but the experiment was a failure as all the 5 repeater failed again.
[11:28 AM, 11/24/2019] π Harwant Singh Chabra: My religion does not really recognize any lower or upper castes as per teaching of the ten gurus and the Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh tried his level best to eliminate caste system. He asked all his followers not to write caste with their names only the first name and Singh.
Unfortunately, due to the evil influence of Caste based Hindu Society it has crept back into the Sikh society in a limited manner.
ME: Absolutely correct Harwantji. You may not know this.I belong to a backward class of people in TN whose occupation is to cut coconuts from trees
[11:31 AM, 11/24/2019] π Harwant Singh Chabra: Yes, I am aware of what the background information about you but for me the caste really has no significance. It is the deeds of a person that are all important.
[11:34 AM, 11/24/2019] π Harwant Singh Chabra: In my religious beliefs, a person born to a cobler or sweeper with good deeds is superior to a Brahman with evil deeds.
[11:51 AM, 11/24/2019] π Harwant Singh Chabra: Also, I am aware that you have never taken any benefit based on caste and have been a meritorious student. We both had our ups and downs but came out of them with courage, determination and hard work.
