053 - 20th Anniversary of my Survival Post Stroke

Dear Radha and Shekher,

One of the Best things that came out of Smule Singing is getting to Know You both. You are not just friends but family, my adopted niece and nephew. God willing we shall meet soon somewhere, may be in Oz or may be in Africa.

I know you both well enough now and need to level with you as to Why I Sing on Smule at my age (I am 71 as you might know.) and why I passionately maintain my Blog for songs Https://Gatarahe.blogspot.com

To date since September 2017 I have recorded 907 different songs and have reached the 7000th recording of which less that 200 are people joining my invites.

I dedicate my 7000th Smule Recording to Radha who chose to send an invite for "Main Na Bhoolonga" which is most appropriate by sheer accident or preordained by some one up there.

I will never forget the two years of encouragements and support by joining each and every one of my invites. Radha You will never ever know how much I have appreciated everything you have done the last two years and I will never forget. Yes Main Naaa Bhoolonga was most appropriate song to celebrate the 7K recording.

Now here is what I want you both to know.

I suffered a major Brain Stem Sroke on 13th April 2000. I was 54 not out and had a very grand 50th Celebration at Home with over 150 guests and Mithu had organised even a Belly Dancer as a Teaser. Never realised what was round the corner just four years later

I went to bed at midnight and woke up at 4.30 in the morning, to find I could move my right hand but could not scratch my nose that was itchy. I tried to get out of bed and my left leg was totally paralysed and like a tree stump.

I had seen Mithu off at the airport the previous day on a business trip to Tokyo and she was still on the plane. .

Long story. To cut it short I was not expected to survive. My right Vertebral artery in my neck was totally blocked cutting off blood supply to the right side of the Brain Stem affecting the right side of my face and neck and the left side of the torso and left leg. This is called an Ischemic stroke where brain cells die for lack of blood. Same stroke that killed Aust Cricketer Phil Hughes.

What caused the blockage in the right vertebral artery is an unknown. The possible causes are Severe Whip lash wen hit by a speeding truck from behind in 1996 to cracking of the neck by chiropractor to ease neck pain. Perhaps a congenital defect considering my mother and her older sister both suffered similar strokes. Neurologist says it was caused by dissection caused by the inner wall of the artery developing a leak and blood trying to flow between the inner and outer wall. Lastly my haematologist believes it was a simple blood clot that blocked the flow. So I will never know the real cause but can never forget the life post stroke, the trials and tribulations.. Just shows how fragile human life is.

Do not panic I have defied odds, taken my life into my own hands and not just survived but am 97% Ok.

Unfortunately my right ear is totally deaf down by 85% and not only that I have severe Tinnitus or ringing in the ears 24/7 and the right side of my voice box is partially paralysed and sluggish.

So Singing on Smule is a Big challenge for me being very deaf in one ear plus ringing plus sluggish vocal chords that flip when I have to raise the pitch..

I am hearing all Smule invites at very high volumes and singing to match but I need your help and guidance in telling me honestly how my recordings sound to you as you have normal hearing.

Family members will never tell me the truth but their silence and not saying the recording is good to me suggests it is awful. Please try and guide me if you can. That is my wish.

You always are very polite and say nice things, instead I want you to tell me how to improve. I love my Critics as they always make me perform better.

Radha You are the only Smule partner who will tell me the truth and explain how to improve. My biggest nightmare is Md Rafi Songs as he reaches pitches I could sing before my stroke but not now but have gained a lot of ground as Most of your invites are Md Rafis songs.

My health is buggered as I also have severe sleep apnea since 1989 and in Jan 2018 required a Pace Maker and became a diabetic in 2003 as a result of the shock of Brain stem stroke.

My Head of Strokes a neurologist at Prince of Wales Hospital, told me in 16 years as head of stroke dept he had seen cases like mine only in autopsies and that I was lucky to escape and to make the best of my life.

Believe it or not on 13th April 2020 I will be celebrating 20 years of life and living with a stroke. My Right vertebral artery is non existent totally blocked.

Hope you have not fallen off the chair. .

"I am a Fighter" and have the Tenacity to Pursue anything I like like a Tiger.

Cheers.

Uncle Ram

PS: Radha other Smule partners might like you, but to me You are the Aalap Queen and I adore your singing. You have a very very unique voice. Shekher miss your joins and please send more invites. How many people join is hardly relevant who joins your invite is what really matters.

Cheers and God Bless you both and your babies
